The neck, also known as the cervical spine, is comprised of the seven vertebrae at the top of the spinal column. Tension and muscular soreness are extremely common in people who have stressful jobs, work long hours, or spend excessive time driving or working on a computer. Tension in the neck is a very common cause of headaches known as "cervicogeneic" headaches.
What Causes Neck Pain?
The neck is the most flexible region of the spine, containing muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, and veins, as well as many ligaments and other supporting structures. Neck pain can begin in
any of these structures or may come from other regions near the neck, like the shoulder, jaw, head, and upper arms. Injury or stress can cause damage to the bones and discs in the neck,
causing pain, discomfort, numbness and/or tingling sensations. The neck also has many muscles and connective tissues that can be adversely affected by stretching, spasm, or strain. Sudden
injury from sports or accidents, herniated discs, blood vessel damage and pressure on the spinal cord are conditions that require medical attention, while less serious causes like stress,
poor posture, natural aging, and too much exercise can also produce neck pain.
According to the American College of Rheumatology, about 10% of the population has an episode of neck pain each year. Neck pain may occur slightly more frequently in women than in men.
